About the Department

The Department of Mechanical Engineering was established in 1981 and is affiliated with Osmania University. The undergraduate (UG) programme currently has an annual intake of 60 students, while the postgraduate (PG) programme, M.E. (Advanced Design and Manufacturing), has an annual intake of 12 students. The UG programme was re-accredited by the NBA for the fourth consecutive time for a period of three years in July 2024. The PG programme was accredited up to June 2022.

The department introduced the B.E. (Honours) programme in Robotics for students admitted during the academic year 2020–21. Students also have the opportunity to pursue a CSE (Minor) offered by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering from 2024-25. By completing an additional 18–20 credits, students can earn either a B.E. (Honours) degree in Robotics or a CSE (Minor).

The department has played a significant role in the institution achieving NAAC A++ accreditation for a period of five years from February 2021 and the grant of UGC autonomy up to the academic year 2030–31.

Osmania University has recognised the department as a Research Centre. The department has a highly qualified and experienced faculty, including 11 doctoral degree holders. Eminent academicians from IITs and experts from industry serve as adjunct faculty. The faculty maintain strong collaborations with industry and research scholars. So far, 12 research scholars have been awarded Ph.D. degrees under the supervision of the department's faculty, while another 12 scholars are currently pursuing their doctoral research under their guidance.

Faculty members regularly publish research papers in reputed national and international journals and conferences. Several faculty members serve as reviewers for leading national and international journals. They actively participate in Faculty Development Programmes (FDPs), workshops, and training programmes to enhance their technical, pedagogical, and research competencies. Faculty members are also encouraged to complete NPTEL certification courses, and several have secured top ranks at the national level in recent years. The faculty are active members of professional bodies such as ASME, IEEE, ISTE, and IE(I). They also contribute significantly through patents, books, and book chapters.

The department consistently attracts high-quality students. The placement record has shown steady improvement over the years in terms of both the quality of recruiters and salary packages. For the academic year 2025–26, the average and highest salary packages stood at ₹4.11 lakh per annum and ₹7.50 lakh per annum, respectively. A significant number of students pursue higher education, including M.S. and MBA programmes, at premier institutions in India and abroad, including the IIMs.

The department actively encourages students to collaborate with industries and higher educational institutions through internships and project work. Students are also required to successfully complete NPTEL certification courses as part of their academic development. The curriculum is comprehensive and well-structured, incorporating soft skills training, technical skill development, and open electives. To enable specialization, students can choose professional electives from five streams: Design Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Thermal Engineering, and Industrial Engineering.

During the last seven years, the department has secured research projects worth ₹123.56 lakh funded by agencies such as DST, UGC, ISRO and AICTE. It has established several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with industries, providing students with opportunities for internships and collaborative projects. In addition, industrial visits are organized annually for third-year students to provide practical exposure to industrial practices.

The department is equipped with excellent infrastructure, including spacious and well-ventilated classrooms, modern laboratories, and advanced licensed software. Selected laboratories remain open beyond regular working hours to facilitate experiential learning and student project work. A dedicated project lab was established to cater the needs of students to build prototypes.

Students actively participate in professional competitions organized by bodies such as ASME and SAE, including ASME e-HPVC and SAE BAJA, and have consistently won prestigious awards. During the academic year 2025–26, the ASME Student Section of Vasavi College of Engineering achieved remarkable success in national-level competitions, including the Second Prize (USD 500) at the IAM3D Competition and the Best Innovation Award (USD 500) at the ASME e-HPVC Competition, among several other accolades.

The department strongly promotes innovation and entrepreneurship among students. As a result, several student projects have been successfully transformed into marketable products.

As part of its social outreach initiatives, the department regularly conducts training programmes to impart technical knowledge and hands-on skills to students from nearby ITIs and diploma institutions. Notably, the department organized a two-week Outreach Training Programme on 3D Printing and Reverse Engineering for 15 cadets of the Bison Division, Indian Army, Hyderabad, from 24 March to 7 April 2026.
