Examination Reforms
Vasavi College of Engineering, which was established in 1981, diligently strives to offer quality in technical education through well-focussed teaching learning process in line with the Vision and Mission statements of the institution. After the conferment of autonomous status by the UGC from the academic year2014-2015, the college has been implementing the Outcome Based Education model for meeting the requirements of the Industry/Higher Education etc. Following are some of the measures with regard to Assessment & Evaluation implemented by the college after the conferment of autonomous status by the UGC:
- Continuous Internal Evaluation (CIE):
- Enhanced the Continuous Internal Evaluation (CIE) component as per the following details to strengthen the continuous learning and evaluation of the students throughout the semester:
- Enhanced CIE component from 25 to 30 marks for all UG Programmes and 20 to 30 marks for all PG Programmes from the academic year 2014-15.
- Further enhancement from 30 to 40 marks for both the UG & PG Programmes from the academic year 2017-18.
- Introduction of three Assignments and three Quizzes in addition to two Internal Tests for all UG and PG Programmes to further strengthen the continuous learning and assessment of the students throughout the semester.
- Introduction of Outcome Based Evaluation model to enhance the quality of Assessment & Evaluation Process by following Blooms Taxonomy and Rubrics in evaluation, as well as addressing the gaps in the curriculum.
- Mapping of questions with the following in the internal examination question paper to ensure balanced cognitive levels of learning as well as to map the continuous assessment with the Outcomes:
- Blooms Taxonomy Levels.
- Course Outcomes (COs).
- Programme Outcomes (POs).
- Enhanced the weightage for questions based on “Critical Thinking” & “Analysis” in the internal examination paper to enable the students to prepare and learn by understanding the concepts rather than by rote learning.

Revision of internal examination question paper viz., PART-A, PART-B and PART-C is done to balance the objective and subjective type of questions asked.
All questions are made compulsory in the question paper to ensure that students prepare for the entire course content prescribed for the examinations. - Introduction of “Review/Moderation” system: The question papers are reviewed by the BoS-Chairman or senior faculty to check the quality of the questions as per prescribed guidelines i.e., Blooms Taxonomy etc.
- Auditing of the internal examination question papers is done by the nominated faculty and the audit findings are shared, if any, with the respective subject teachers to ensure corrective action in the process for the future cycles of examinations.
- Scoring Minimum of 40% aggregate marks has been made compulsory in CIE for the student to be eligible for writing Semester-End Examinations both for B.E. and MCA.
- Introduction of deputation of “Squads” to examination halls is done to ensure strict vigilance during examinations.
- Enhanced the Continuous Internal Evaluation (CIE) component as per the following details to strengthen the continuous learning and evaluation of the students throughout the semester:

Semester-End Examinations (SEE):
- Question papers are set by subject experts from different Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) like IITs, NITs, BITS, State Universities etc., as well as by identified internal faculty.
- Introduced the setting of hybrid version of question papers by selecting quality questions from the question papers set by external and internal subject experts.
- Auditing of SEE question papers by external subject experts is done to review the standards of the question paper and also to short-list the experts for setting question papers in the future, based on the quality questions set by them.
- Introduced the system of “Revaluation” thus enabling the students to appeal for any discrepancies in the valuation.
- System of issue of photocopy of the answer script to the students’ on-demand has been introduced enabling the student to verify the scheme of award of marks.
- Provision has been made for the students to improve their CGPA (upto VIII-Semester) by allowing them to appear for “Improvement Examinations” within one year of their graduation.
- A system of “Advanced Supplementary Examinations” has been introduced for even semesters of B.E. Programme to provide equal opportunity to students to appear for supplementary examinations in both odd and even semesters in the same academic year and to enable them to reduce their backlogs.
- Introduced “Make-up Examinations” in all semesters for PG (M.E./M.Tech) students enabling them to clear backlogs and ensure better transition across semesters.

Introduced the following “Promotion Rules” for making the students responsible for their transition across semesters:
- For B.E. Programme: A student has
- to secure minimum 75% aggregate attendance at the end of each semester to get promoted to next semester and also become eligible to write Semester-End Examinations of that semester.
- to secure a minimum of 40% aggregate marks in CIE to be eligible to write SEE of that semester.
- to secure a minimum of 50% of total credits prescribed for I & II-Semesters to get promoted to III-Semester.
- to secure a minimum of 50% of total credits prescribed for III & IV-Semesters and also to clear all courses of I-Year to get promoted to V-Semester.
- to secure a minimum of 50% of total prescribed credits of V & VI-Semesters and also clear all the courses of II-Year to get promoted to VII-Semester.
- For MCA Programme: A student has
- to secure a minimum of 75% aggregate attendance at the end of each semester to get promoted to next semester and also become eligible to write Semester-End Examinations of that semester.
- to secure minimum of 40% aggregate marks in CIE to be eligible to write SEE of that semester.
- to secure a minimum of 50% of total credits prescribed for I & II-Semesters to get promoted to III-Semester.
- to secure minimum 50% of total credits prescribed for III & IV-semesters and also clear all courses of I-Year to get promoted to V-Semester.

For M.E./M.Tech Programme:
Introduced the following eligibility condition for PG students to register for Project Dissertation to ensure successful transition across semesters:- “A student shall be permitted to register for Project/Dissertation only if there are not more than three courses as backlogs*, subject to a maximum of 9 (nine) credits from the previous semesters by the end of II Semester of their study”, from the year 2014-2015.
