Dr.M. Chakravarthy, Professor & HOD

Dr.M. Chakravarthy obtained his B.Tech. degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Nagarjuna University Guntur, India in 1999, M.Tech degree in Power Systems from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Kakinada, India in 2005, and Ph.D degrees from J.N.T University, Hyderabad, India in 2013. He joined in Vasavi College of Engineering EEE Department, as a professor in 2014. He is presently working as Professor & Head of the E.E.E Department, Vasavi College of Engineering, Hyderabad. He has over 20 years of experience in teaching, training and research, he worked in various colleges like GRIET, GITAM University, Hyderabad. His areas of research include power system monitoring, smart grids, Hybrid Vehicles, solar power MPPT, Battery Management System, Programmable Logic Controllers etc. He has guided more than 20 M.E projects and number of B.E projects. He is a recognized Research Supervisor under Osmania University, KL University and Gitam university, he is currently supervising the 13 research scholars. He has more than 30 publications in both national and international journals and presented several papers in national and international conferences.

He was instrumental in establishing Programmable Logic Controller and Applications lab with state of art facilities having more emphasis on industry needs.

Project #1

Project : Recycling of Lithium Ion Batteries.
Fund received : Royal Academy of Engineering, UK.
Cost : Rs. 50,000 pounds
Duration : 24 months ( April, 2018 – April, 2020)

Description of Project:

The project entitled "Development of Low Cost Methods for Recycling Lithium Ion Batteries”, is a collaborative project with open University, UK, IIT Hyderabad and Vasavi College of Engineering, Hyderabad awarded by the Royal Academy of Engineering under its remit as a delivery partner of the Newton-Bhabha Fund. The total sum of the Award amounts to £50,000 payable to the Open University UK, IIT Hyderabad and Vasavi College of Engineering in accordance with the terms of the Industry Academia Partnership Programme -17/18 Round 2 Contract dated 26 March 2018, with vasavi’s share of 6842 pounds out of 50000 pounds.

Project #2

Project : 100kW Grid tied PV Solar Power System.
Client : M/s Fourth Partner Energy, Hyderabad, T.S., India.
Cost : Rs. 80.41 lakhs
Duration : 12 weeks (04 November, 2013 – 26 January, 2014)

Description of Project:

A 100kWp, Solar Power System with seasonal tilt and 5 x 20 kVA high efficiency string inverters was installed at Gokaraju Rangaraju Institute of Engineering & Technology (GRIET), Hyderabad, Telangana on January 26, 2014. The college has a connected load (CL) of 800kW that includes canteen, laboratory equipment, yard lighting and classrooms with contract maximum demand (CMD) of 500KVA and connected to grid at 11KV. Installed 110kWp solar plant serves one thirds of the college needs. The system generates appx. 3,252MWh of power during its lifetime of 25 years. Installing a 100kWp system is equivalent to planting 5,885 mature trees.

Project : Test Setups for Vector control of Induction Motor, Speed control of Stepper Motor,Dual Converter, PWM based choppers
Client : M/s Future Tech Instruments Pvt. Ltd., Hyderabd, T.S., India.
Cost : Rs.2.07 lakhs
Duration : 8 weeks (14 November, 2013 – 09 January, 2014)

Description of Project:

In this project Experimental test setups to conduct Vector control of Induction Motor, Speed control of Stepper Motor, Dual Converter, PWM based choppers were designed, developed and installed at TKR College of Engineering and Technology, Hyderabad, T.S., India. These experimental setups were utilized by post graduate students with Power Electronics specialization to understand concepts like vector control, PWM techniques and also to understand the working of converters, choppers and speed control of stepper motor.

Project #4

Project : Automation of Electrical Machines test procedure
Client : M/s Future Tech Instruments Pvt. Ltd., Hyderabad, T.S., India.
Cost : Rs.2 lakhs
Duration : 8 weeks (17 November, 2012 – 12 January, 2013)

Description of Project:

In this project an automated test setup was developed, where electrical machines can be tested to obtain their performance characteristics. This setup utilizes LabVIEW environment along with data acquisition cards for data acquisition and control. Data was acquired from various voltages, current and speed sensors through data acquisition systems and analyzed in the LabVIEW environment and then control commands were send to the drive controls through hardware interface. These setups can be used by post graduate and research scholars for system identification, to study the system response with different test signals and to design compensators and optimal controllers for electrical machines.

Project : Test Setups for Electrical Machines Lab
Client : M/s Sai-Sudhir Institute of Eng. and Tech. for Women, Hyderabad, T.S., India.
Cost : Rs.3 lakhs
Duration : 8 weeks (27 October – 22 November 2010)

Description of Project:

In this project Experimental test setups to conduct Swinburn’s test on DC shunt machine, Open circuit, short circuit and Load tests on single phase Transformer, Brake test on DC Shunt Motor, Magnetization Characteristic and load characteristics on DC Shunt Generator and Brake test on Induction Motor were designed, developed and installed at Electrical Machines laboratory, Sai-Sudhir Institute of Engineering and Technology for Women, Hyderabad, T.S., India. These setups were equipped with DC Drives, Voltage, Current and speed sensors for measurements, potentiometers, contactors, switches, MCB’s for control operations and safety. These setups were utilized by under graduate Engineering students to study the performance characteristics of various types of Electrical Machines.

Project : Automation of Electrical Machines laboratory
Sponsor : AICTE, New Delhi under MODROBS scheme

Duration : 2 Years (completed on 26 January 2011)

Description of Project:

In this project we have designed, developed and installed experimental test setups to conduct Open Circuit and load characteristics of DC Machines using ABB PLC. This setup utilizes PLC for data acquisition and control. Data was acquired from various voltages, current and speed sensors through data acquisition systems and analyzed in the PLC software environment and then control commands were send to the drives through hardware interface. This setup was equipped with DC Drives to drive the DC machines, relay cards for switching operations, sensors for voltage, current and speed measurements. This setup can be utilized to demonstrate how Automation can be done in a process control Industry for under graduate and post graduate students
